Rutherford Building, University of Manchester – Seddon
LOCATION
Manchester, UK
BACKGROUND TO THE PROJECT
The Rutherford Building is a Grade II Listed property, undergoing refurbishment for the University of Manchester. This sensitive restoration project required meticulous planning to preserve the original architectural features, many of which were irreplaceable.
THE CHALLENGE
With listed status, every surface within the building needed to be protected from damage. The delicate heritage brickwork, marble staircase, and original terrazzo tiles had to remain defect-free throughout the refurbishment. Many finishes, including curved window sills and stair details, added further complexity.
As with all projects carried out by Seddon, health and safety was a top priority, adding another layer of consideration to the protection strategy.
PROJECT SOLUTION
Protec conducted a detailed site visit and developed a comprehensive protection plan tailored to the unique requirements of the Rutherford Building. The aim was to ensure maximum surface protection while allowing the construction team to operate safely and efficiently.
THE OUTCOME
The temporary protection has remained in place for over a year and continues to perform exceptionally well. TecDura, in particular, has drawn attention from site visitors and operatives for its versatility and effectiveness, especially on curved and intricate finishes.
The result has been a refurbishment project where key heritage features have been fully preserved, and the site has remained safe and accessible throughout the works.
“I have had a great experience with Protec. The protection works well, is fit for purpose and durable. TecDura is an especially good product especially for protecting staircases. We looked at all other possibilities to protect the staircase, but TecDura was by far the best solution. It is also great that we could use it on the curved sills. Really impressed.”
