PROJECT: Trinity Academy

MAIN CONTRACTOR: Kier

BACKGROUND TO THE PROJECT

Kier were undertaking works at Trinity Academy in Bradford, where part of the project required access over a newly installed sports hall floor. Protecting the floor surface from potential damage caused by ongoing site activities was a key priority.

THE CHALLENGE

The sports floor needed to be safeguarded against heavy traffic, including scaffold towers, MEWPs, pallet trucks, and general site operations. Initially, Kier considered using plywood sheets as a protection method. However, following discussions with Protec, the team learned that plywood is not compliant with JCOP (the Joint Code of Practice). JCOP advises against the use of combustible materials like ply for temporary protection due to increased fire risk and compliance issues.

Kier therefore required a durable, compliant, and easy-to-handle alternative that could withstand high impact and repetitive loading while keeping the site safe and in line with regulations.

PROJECT SOLUTION

Protec carried out a detailed review of the site requirements and proposed ImpactBoardFR as the ideal solution. This high-performance, non-combustible temporary floor protection board is designed to provide exceptional impact resistance and load-bearing strength, making it perfect for areas exposed to heavy site traffic.

ImpactBoard was installed across the sports hall floor, creating a safe and compliant working surface for site operatives and machinery while preventing any damage to the underlying sports flooring.

THE OUTCOME

ImpactBoard provided Kier with complete peace of mind – ensuring the floor remained fully protected and damage-free throughout the project.

Key benefits included:

  • JCOP compliant – non-combustible and fire safe
  • Extremely durable – capable of withstanding heavy loads and repeated use
  • Reusable and sustainable – can be remanufactured through Protec’s ClosedLoop scheme
  • Quick and easy to install – minimising disruption to site operations

“We used Protec’s Impactboard for protection on a sport hall floor at Trinity Academy, not only was the Impactboard easy to install, it provided great protection for varying level of traffic on site, from general footfall to scaffold frames. The Impactboard was far lighter than plywood and we had no issues with placing and removing the sheets following completion of the job. The school was so pleased with the versatility of the protection that they enquired if they could retain the protection to be used as floor protection during exams.”
