PROJECT: Heathrow Airport

CONTRACTOR: Access Floors Ltd

BACKGROUND TO THE PROJECT

This high-profile infrastructure project at Heathrow Airport involves the installation of new security equipment for both passengers and staff. As one of the world’s busiest transport hubs, the work is being carried out in live, operational areas – making safety, cleanliness and speed of installation absolutely essential.

With a wide range of floor finishes already in place – from raised access floors to vinyl and carpeted areas – robust protection is key to preventing costly damage during the works.

THE CHALLENGE

Due to the fast-paced nature of the project, with multiple trades working in close coordination, protecting completed surfaces from accidental damage was vital. Traditional solutions like 2mm Correx were considered, but proved insufficient for the heavy foot traffic and continuous movement on site.

The project needed a flame-retardant, durable and sustainable alternative that could be quickly installed, repositioned between phases, and reused without compromising protection – all while meeting Heathrow’s stringent health and safety requirements.

PROJECT SOLUTION

Protec’s ImpactBoardFR was specified as the temporary protection of choice. Tough, fire-rated and waterproof, it offers outstanding protection for finished floors while being lightweight and easy to handle – a crucial benefit in such a dynamic, live environment.

Orange Projoint Tape was used to secure the boards, offering a strong hold and high visibility to quickly spot and resolve any loose joints, reducing the risk of trip hazards in public-facing areas.

To support the contractor’s sustainability goals, all used ImpactBoards are being collected for remanufacture through Protec’s ClosedLoop Remanufacturing Scheme – helping to reduce site waste and cut carbon emissions.

THE OUTCOME

ImpactBoardFR has delivered exactly what the project needed:

· Tough, long-lasting protection across high-traffic zones

· A neat, professional finish suitable for public-facing environments

· Easy repositioning between phases without compromising performance

· Fire-rated compliance across the site

· Contribution to sustainability through ClosedLoop

“We have been using the ImpactBoard on all of our projects over the last year or so. It’s of exceptional quality, can be moved and re-used, and can be returned for recycling as well. This is a perfect solution for our requirements on our sites and keeps us on track with our aim for waste management and carbon footprint.”
